The Rural Infrastructure Development Agency (RIDA) will prioritise water and road rehabilitation and development in Mashonaland West this year, with resuscitating older boreholes and drilling new ones seen as a quick way to improve quality of lives.

Speaking yesterday after paying a courtesy call on newly appointed Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Mashonaland West Marrian Chombo, RIDA director-general Mr Christopher Shumba said they want to ensure that development was brought to every corner of the country in line with President Mnangagwa’s call for rural development.

Zimbabwe has set a target of becoming an upper-middle income economy by 2030, with rural infrastructure development said to be key in attaining the goal.

Said Mr Shumba: “We intend to hit the ground running in terms of development and our target is to ensure that the low-hanging fruits that are the broken-down boreholes are resuscitated. We are going to ensure that all broken-down boreholes are resuscitated.”

All provinces had been capacitated with borehole drilling rigs that would be used to drill new boreholes so that the national target of 35 000 boreholes, one per village, is attained.

RIDA is also in the process of rehabilitating and scooping dams to enhance water availability in rural areas for irrigation. Zimbabwe is also on a deliberate drive towards irrigation mechanisation and revival of communal schemes to climate-proof agricultural activities to enhance yields and consequently food security.

With Zimbabwe expected to receive normal to below normal rainfall this summer season due to the El Nino phenomenon, the rehabilitation of dams is expected to promote farming. Besides the major dams there are large numbers of what are usually called farm dams, but some of these are silted up and others need modest repairs to their dam walls and spillways.

On roads, Mr Shumba said an improved road network would help develop the lives of rural folks.

RIDA has worked on roads totalling to 600km and 14 bridges in Mashonaland West this year.

Minister Chombo said the province was in need of more boreholes and dams.

“We are in need of more boreholes and dams to increase access of clean water to our communities.

“As climate change takes a toll on the nation, we envisage to push and revive and introduce more communal irrigation schemes in the province to mitigate the negative effects of climate changes,” she said.

Minister Chombo has pledged to carry forward the bilateral relations that exist between Mashonaland West province and other provinces from across the regional and Asian nations.

Zimbabwe has twinning arrangements with Kavango East in Namibia and Gansui Province in China and others in Zambia and Türkiye.
