A borehole is a Narrow Hole or Shaft created by Drilling into the ground to get to the bedrock where underground water can be found and brought to the surface.

For drillers to get to the bedrock, they first need to get through Overburden which is made up of sand, gravel, clay, boulders, and water that is sitting on top of the bedrock.

What Are The Benefits Of Having A Borehole?

  1. Borehole Water is rich in minerals: One of the great things about getting water from the ground is that you get water that is full of minerals. A borehole is an excellent way to access pure and natural underground water.
  2. Underground water is chemical-free: When it comes to underground water, you don’t even have to worry about chemicals. The water comes out fresh and contains no chemicals.
  3. Increases property value: The value of your house can simply go up by a couple of thousand Rands if you have drilled a borehole.
  4. Decrease the demand for the municipal water supply: Having your own borehole drilled will help decrease the demand on municipal water in your area.
  5. It will give you the garden you desire: One of the many reasons to drill a borehole is the freedom of knowing that you can water your garden without worrying about the municipal bill.

Borehole Water Costs Much Less Than Municipal Water:

But remember, “anyone using borehole water for human & possibly animal consumption, or filling a swimming pool, needs to have a Water Quality test done & this should be done on an annual basis.

When taking a sample of your borehole water for a Quality test, please rinse out the container, preferably a new unused one, with water from the borehole,” concludes James.

Consuming unsafe water can result in diseases such as cholera and typhoid.

How Borehole Drilling Is Done?

  1. You first need a borehole drilling machine. The most common drilling machine can hold drill bit rods that are up to 20ft long. The driller will start drilling, sending down a 20ft drill rod into the ground. Once the rod has reached where the drill head can not go past, a collar is secure around the end of the drill rod to avoid it falling into the hole. The drill head is detached from the drill rod and goes back up to connect to another 20ft drill rod. The second rod will be connected to the first one and the collar is removed to allow the drill to continue.
  2. As soon as the drill reaches the bedrock, a 6” still pipe is pushed into the drilled hole to avoid the overburden from collapsing and blocking the hole.
  3. Once the steel casing reaches the bedrock, the driller switches to hammer drilling to break through the bedrock to reach the groundwater.
  4. The drilled borehole is 2” wider than the steel casing, and you are required to seal the gap to avoid surface water from making its way down all the way to the bedrock and contaminating the groundwater.
  5. When the drill reaches groundwater, depending on how much water is in the ground you have drilled into, the water will shoot out, giving you an indication that you have hit the jackpot. This happens because of the compressed air pumped into the bottom of the well. When this happens, the driller will stop to assess the situation and check the flow rate of the groundwater.
  6. Now that you have drilled and have inserted the casing in the borehole, It is time to insert the borehole pump down the borehole. This will help pump out water into a storage tank for use in your house or for irrigation.
